Wild mustangs of Steens Mountain were photographed in the spring of 2015. This slide show represents several days spent photographing these wild horses on the South Steens Loop Road. Two different herds were photographed during this time, and several satellite horses seemed to follow the herds from some distance. Several new colts were present, and as rowdy as the stallions behaved, everyone seemed to be watchful of the young colts underfoot. April and May of 2015 was a very dry period in southeast Oregon. The horses repeatedly showed up at the very few remaining watering holes in the foothills of the Steens. The Bureau of Land Management oversees the wild mustang herds. It is a priority to protect the Kiger Mustang gene pool that is unique to the Steens Mountain herds.
