Terry Steele
was born and raised in Eastern Oregon. His family may have fit
better in an earlier time, as they were never happier than when
they were hunting or fishing. He was raised on the outer edge of
a tiny town by working parents, and these circumstances left him
free to roam the open spaces around him. His early heroes were
not great thinkers or composers, but rather, two-fisted men of
action. He spent hours listening to his father speak admirably
of local men who could shoot the straightest, punch the hardest
and follow the hounds the farthest. For Terry, (I was "a horrible
student") this rough life had far more appeal than knowing the
difference between an adjective and a verb. Circumstances and time slowly led Terry into a different
appreciation of the natural world. As wild places continue to
decrease, so has Terry’s desire to have only a consumptive use
for nature. Where learning once caused him anguish, he now
hungers for knowledge. He is a self-taught naturalist
and photographer. He sees God as the artist and himself as one
who tries to isolate small parts of that great art. Terry hopes to
increase your love of nature, too, because (as is often said) we try
to preserve that which we love.
